Laryngitis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx (voice box) generally associated with hoarseness or loss of voice. Laryngitis is the medical term for inflammation and swelling of the larynx, which is also known as the voice box. When acute laryngitis occurs in the course of a cold or other infection. it will usually disappear with disappearance of the underlying disease.

Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx . Laryngitis also may accompany bronchitis or any other inflammation or infection of the upper airways. Symptoms are an unnatural change of voice, such as hoarseness, or even loss of voice that develops within hours to a day or so. Laryngitis is common in adults under the age of 40 and children over the age of three (1). It is the bane of performers and other professionals who depend on their voice for their art and livelihood.

Causes of Laryngitis

Most of the causes of laryngitis, such as common viruses or using your voice too much, are not serious. It may cause your voice to change, or you may lose your voice entirely for a short while. The problem is most common in late fall, winter, or early spring. Here are the list of the possible causes of Laryngitis:

  • Laryngitis is usually caused by a virus or by bacteria.
  • Such causes include various allergies , contact with physical or chemical irritants , reflux and straining the larnyx through singing or shouting.
  • The most common cause of laryngitis is a viral infection of the upper airways, such as the common cold.
  • use of asthma inhalers,
  • upper gastrointestinal disease
  • People who smoke, have allergies, or strain their voices by yelling, talking, or singing may also come down with the problem.

Symptoms of Laryngitis

The most prominent symptom is an unnatural change of voice. Hoarseness and even complete loss of voice may occur, along with sensations of tickling and rawness and an urge to clear the throat almost constantly. In more severe cases, fever, throat pain and malaise may develop. Sometimes, if there is much fluid swelling of the larynx, there may be breathing difficulty.Some sign and symptoms related to Laryngitis are as follows:

  • Swollen lymph nodes or glands in the neck
  • Recent or current upper respiratory infection
  • Feeling a tickle in your throat
  • The urge to constantly clear your throat
  • Fever
  • The classic symptoms are a hoarse, low voice, and a scratchy throat.
  • an irritating cough, and
  • needing to clear the throat excessively.

Treatment of Laryngitis

Treatment of Laryngitis are as follows:

  • Many people find inhaling steam, such as from a hot bath or shower, or a cool mist humidifier makes them feel better.
  • In all cases you should avoid smoking and areas where others are smoking.
  • A tea of gingerroot can help reduce swelling of the vocal chords and relieve symptoms.
  • Your physician may prescribe steroids to help accelerate the healing of the inflammation present.
  • Drink warm liquids such as tea or a honey-lemon drink.
  • Most of the time, your doctor will recommend the home care actions and may prescribe a steroid injection or prescription.
  • If the doctor is concerned about a bacterial infection causing the laryngitis, then he or she will prescribe a course of antibiotics.
